What is a Cataract?

A cataract is the gradual clouding of the natural lens inside the eye. The lens sits behind the iris and pupil and is responsible for focusing light onto the retina. When proteins within the lens begin to break down — usually as a result of ageing, though diabetes, UV exposure, and certain medications can accelerate the process — the lens loses its transparency and vision becomes progressively blurred.

Cataracts are one of the leading causes of reversible vision loss in India. The good news is that cataract surgery is one of the most well-established, safe, and effective surgical procedures in all of medicine. At Jagdamba Eye Hospital in Bhiwadi, we perform cataract surgery routinely, with outcomes that consistently allow patients to see clearly again.

Key facts: Cataracts affect both eyes but often develop at different rates. Surgery is performed one eye at a time, typically a few weeks apart. Recovery is rapid — most patients return to normal activities within one to two days.

Symptoms of Cataract

  • Blurred, cloudy, or dim vision that cannot be fully corrected with glasses
  • Increasing difficulty with vision in low light or at night
  • Sensitivity to bright light or glare, particularly from oncoming car headlights
  • Seeing "halos" around lights
  • Colours appearing washed out or yellowed
  • Frequent changes in your glasses prescription without corresponding improvement
  • Double vision in one eye

How is Cataract Surgery Performed at Jagdamba Eye Hospital?

We use the phacoemulsification (phaco) technique — the gold standard for cataract surgery worldwide. Here is what happens:

1. Pre-operative Assessment: Before your surgery date, your eye is measured precisely using optical biometry (IOL Master or similar) to calculate the exact power of the artificial lens (IOL) that will replace your cloudy natural lens. We discuss lens options with you, including standard monofocal lenses and premium options like toric lenses for patients with astigmatism.

2. The Procedure: On the day of surgery, dilating and anaesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The operation is performed under local anaesthesia — you are awake but feel no pain. Dr. Ajay Seth creates a tiny incision of approximately 2–3 mm at the edge of the cornea. A thin probe is inserted, which uses ultrasound energy to break up (emulsify) the cloudy lens into small fragments that are then gently aspirated from the eye. The natural capsule (the bag that held the lens) is left intact.

3. IOL Implantation: Once the cloudy lens is removed, a foldable intraocular lens (IOL) is inserted through the same tiny incision and unfolds into position inside the capsule. No stitches are generally required — the incision is self-sealing.

4. Recovery: The whole procedure takes around 15–20 minutes. You rest briefly in our recovery area before going home. Most patients notice significantly improved vision within 24 hours, with final vision stabilising over 2–4 weeks.

Intraocular Lens Options

  • Monofocal IOL: Provides sharp vision at one distance (usually distance). Reading glasses are still needed for near work. Most affordable option.
  • Toric IOL: Corrects astigmatism in addition to the cataract, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses for distance vision. Recommended for patients with significant astigmatism.
  • Multifocal IOL: Provides focus at multiple distances, potentially reducing dependence on glasses altogether for both near and far vision. Dr. Seth will discuss whether you are a good candidate based on your lifestyle and ocular health.

What to Expect After Surgery

After cataract surgery, you will use antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops for several weeks as directed. Activities to avoid in the first week include rubbing the eye, swimming, and exposure to dusty environments. You will be reviewed at one day, one week, and one month post-surgery, with additional visits if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cataract surgery painful?
No. The eye is numbed thoroughly with drops before the procedure. Most patients report feeling slight pressure but no pain during surgery. Any mild discomfort in the first day or two after is well managed with the prescribed drops.
How long does the surgery take?
The actual surgical procedure takes around 15–20 minutes per eye. Including preparation and a brief rest period in recovery, plan for around 2 hours at the hospital on the day.
When can I drive after cataract surgery?
Most patients can drive again within a few days, once vision in the operated eye has stabilised sufficiently and the doctor has confirmed it is safe. Do not drive on the day of surgery.
Will I still need glasses after cataract surgery?
With a standard monofocal IOL, most patients need reading glasses for close work. Premium multifocal or extended depth-of-focus lenses can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses, though not everyone is suitable. Dr. Seth will discuss the options in detail at your consultation.
Can cataracts come back after surgery?
The lens that has been removed cannot grow back. However, some patients develop a secondary cloudiness called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) months to years after surgery. This is easily and painlessly treated with a quick laser procedure (YAG capsulotomy) in the clinic.
